What is your drive?

What motivates you in life? What keeps you going in your career, business or ministry? Why do you do the things you do?

Your life purpose should be your drive. Purpose is the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.

Most people make money their drive but they realize after making the money that they still feel empty and unfulfilled. If you feel unfulfilled and unnecessarily stressed in life, it could be because you are being driven by the wrong things or because you are focusing on too many things. Let us look at some reasons why you should focus on your purpose:

1. Focusing on your purpose makes your life more meaningful: everything in life was made for a purpose. The sun was made to give light in the day. The moon was made to give light in the night. Trees were made to bear fruits. Your life will be meaningless if you do not know the purpose of your existence. That was why Jesus cursed the fig tree.

Mark 11: 12

The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. 14 Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.

19 When evening came, Jesus and his disciples[c] went out of the city.

20 In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. 21 Peter remembered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!”

22 “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered.

2. Focusing on your purpose makes your life simple:

when you are focusing on your purpose, you don't engage in unnecessary activities that complicates your life. It is easier to live simply and make better decisions when you are focusing on your purpose. Living simply ensures you don't lose touch of the things you value most or spend more time doing unimportant things. A simple life is less stressful and more fulfilling.

1 Thessalonians 4:11

Make it your aim to live a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to earn your own living, just as we told you before.

3. Focusing on your purpose saves you from instability:

it is only when you have a purpose to focus on that you can avoid instability. Until you get rid of instability, you cannot succeed in what you do. No one gets to his destination by constantly changing directions. When you go around changing your ways due to instability, the result is always shame.

Luke 9: 62

Jesus replied, "No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God."

Luke 17:32

Remember Lot’s wife.

 4. Focusing on your purpose motivates you to do more:

clarity of purpose keeps you going even when things are not looking great. It is a clear purpose that keeps you going when passion dwindles.

Habakkuk 2:3
This vision is for a future time. It describes the end, and it will be fulfilled. If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place. It will not be delayed.

  1. Purpose is just like a foundation which determines the shape of a structure. Same way in life your purpose has to be the foundation that determines what your realities will look like.
Another interesting challenge we can't undermine is that sometimes a man's situation or reality may be conflicting with his purpose. For instance you are pursuing a law career, but don't have the money to sponsor your education; it will result to probably doing menial jobs to be able to save up money. The present reality as we can see is your a an unskilled labour, but the real truth is that your working towards your purpose which is getting money to sponsor your education. The problem at this stage of a man's pursuit of his purpose is that devastation tends to come in, which may result to abandonment of a designed goal. As such cases a man needs more than just motivational thoughts to keep pushing that's why the ministry of the word of God and the holy Spirit is important for any man who desires to fulfill his purpose.
In the ministry of Jesus the reality of the death on the cross made him pray: May this cup pass me Lord but not my will but your will. He prayed in the spirit till his physical countenance changed that he sweated blood. A change that empowered his mind and not the body, for the body must suffer the pain of death.

It was not in the season of the fig tree to bear fruits just like we read, but still Jesus caused the tree because there was no fruit of it. Why -- because there's a secret to bearing fruit in season and out of season. Read Psalms chapter 1.
That Bible passage just reflects the lives of Christian's we see today. We profess the word, but has not worked in the spirit to bear fruits.

    2. Though their is a difference between your purpose and the vehicle you use to live it. Being a lawyer is the vehicle, i.e, the means. The main purpose could be to defend the oppressed, which you can still achieve in other ways. As in the instance you gave, the person may struggle with menial jobs until he becomes rich and with the purpose to defend the oppressed in mind, he starts an NGO and pay lawyers to defend the people who can't afford one.
