The Mistake of Inconsistency

Whatever we dream to become great at, we need to give it time, focus on it and keep repeating it. In life, I have seen people make the mistake of being here and there, trying different stuff and never settling with one. You need to give at least one hour everyday for 5 years to anything you wish to be great at. I know a woman who has tried to be great at something, she has been at it for five years now, but she has nothing to show for her endeavors. Her endeavors would have started yielding on the fifth year if she had been consistently focused on one thing. She has a good reason for whatever thing she left behind to pursue another, but sometimes good reasons are not enough. Below are some of her reasons and how she would have succeeded:

  1. It wasn’t her area of study: she didn’t feel good about her job because she felt it was something different from her career path. She envied people in the organization who are in her career path and she decided to quit and look for something in her career path. If she had remained and worked on the path she was placed, she would have become great with practice and experience. It would have become her career 5 years later and others would have been coming to her for insight.

  2. It wasn’t in tune with her personality: she tried to go after her dream of being in her career path only to realize it wasn’t as easy as she thought. Nothing in life comes easy, it is you who will decide to choose one difficult path and work until it becomes easy for you. So she decided to quit and take on an easier path. If she had remained and worked on the path she admired, she would have struggled until she discovers how to do it without struggling.
  3. There is no room for advancement: she decide to try something else she had interest in only to discover she felt stuck. She was not making progress, she didn’t see any sign that she wouldn’t remain on the same spot in the future. She decided to try a little bit harder considering how many things she has given up on already. She tried longer and harder than she is used to, but she gave up. If she had remained and continued working on the path she choose, she would have discovered other ways to advance in it.
  4. She doesn’t have what it takes: she started feeling stuck and decided to give up on everything. Maybe she was just trying the wrong things. Maybe she doesn’t really have what it takes to be great in any area of life. The truth is that whatever you believe will become the truth for you. If you think you can, then you can. Just pick a hustle, work on getting better at it everyday, have a clear picture of what you are aiming at. Focus on your journey avoid distractions and side show attractions. Finally, give it some time.
