LIVE A LIFE TRUE TO YOURSELF

Do you try to live the way other people expect? In what areas of your life have you lived true to yourself?

Sometimes we get used to living for people that we forget what we wanted. I never consciously made the decision to live life on my terms but recently, I looked back and realized I have always lived that way.

I got married to the love of my life, I tried my dream businesses and dream jobs, I tried skills and hobbies I found interesting. I have never allowed events or people to stop me. But I also realized something else, ‘I have always stopped myself.’

Do you know you can stop yourself without even knowing it? For instance, the career you have right now, how did you end up in it? People settle in a career for various reasons:

·        It could be what they are used to: the problem with this is that what you are used to is not the only available option. There is more and there is no way to find out whether it’s better because you will never try.

·        It could be what you believed you are capable of: if you do not judge yourself correctly, you will agree with me that you made a mistake by believing you are only capable of this much.

·        It could be the only available option. If you decide never to give up, you will find more options. But most times we don’t because of a lot of genuine reasons.

·        It could be what looks like the greatest: whatever you think is the greatest now has been determined by the environment you found yourself in. A change of environment will open your eyes to new possibilities. That’s why there is a saying that a traveler is wiser than his elders.

·        It could be because someone you admire does that: sometimes we are not conscious about this choice to follow the part of our heroes, but if you look deep down, you may observe this trend.

·        It could be because you stumbled into it: people can stumble into a career or job in some ways.

·        It could be because you got an idea: ideas are everywhere. People put ideas in our minds; we get ideas after seeing an event, a movie, a book or after hearing a story. You can get ideas from experiences. There is an unending flow of ideas out there in the universe. The question is, have you gotten that idea that will make a difference? Have you gotten an idea that will make you fight with everything in you? Have you gotten an idea that is worth everything? One idea is enough to make a difference. One idea is enough to fuel your passion for ever. One idea can be worth millions or billions.

Oh, it seems I derailed a little from the topic. Living a life true to yourself is not all about finding or being in the perfect career, it is about doing what makes you feel purposeful and fulfilled. It is about living your best life. Most people do certain things because it is what their parents, sponsors or friends love. Have you ever taken time to find out what you actually love?

Whatever it is you feel you love, have you taken time to find out how the love came about? Have you told yourself you can’t do certain things? Why do you believe that you can’t? That is where being your own limitation starts from; it starts from the things you tell yourself. Maybe you do not know better. Why not do all it takes to know? Knowledge is one thing that can take you away from limitations of every kind; be it environment, habit, thought pattern, tradition, background, values, relationships, fears and worries of life. What are the things you do to expand your knowledge?
